Past: Crisp Museum Hosting 'Historic Tuesday Talk'

The “Young British Artists Art Movement” will be the focus of the Feb. 5 installment in the “Historic Tuesday Talk” series in the Rosemary Berkel and Harry L. Crisp II Museum at Southeast Missouri State University’s River Campus.

Joshua Newth, instructor and interim foundations coordinator in Southeast’s Department of Art and Design, will give the presentation at 7 p.m., which is free and open to the public.

In 1988 London, a group of British artists exhibited together for the first time. Noted for their shock tactics and the use of common materials in uncommon ways, these artists became known as the “Young British Artists.” Notable early works include a tiger shark preserved in formaldehyde by Damien Hirst, and a disheveled bed surrounded by the detritus of everyday life by Tracy Emin. Collectively, these artists set the tone for contemporary art and paved the way for creative inclusion in the 21st century.

Newth teaches foundations courses and his paintings and drawings express an affinity for nature and an exploration of the idea of beauty in the ordinary. He has exhibited nationally at the Toledo Museum of Art, Louisiana State University, Tampa Museum of Art and Hockaday Museum. He earned a Bachelor of Science in cell and developmental biology from Michigan State University and a Master of Fine Art in painting from Wayne State University.

The “Historic Tuesday Talk” series takes place at 7 p.m. on select Tuesdays in the Crisp Museum through April 2. The talks consist of short, informational presentations and discussion sessions, and topics include movements, Civil War, World War I, riverboats, railroads, socio-cultural issues, space exploration, regional history, natural resources, fossils, geology and more.
