Past: ‘Dave Carter: OPUS 68’ Opens July 5 in Crisp Museum

“Dave Carter: OPUS 68” opens on Friday, July 5, in the Rosemary Berkel and Harry L. Crisp II Museum at Southeast Missouri State University’s River Campus.

The public is invited to view the exhibition beginning July 5. An opening reception is scheduled for 4-8 p.m. that evening and will include an artist’s talk at 6 p.m. The exhibit will remain on display through Aug. 25. Admission is free.

The exhibition is a retrospective of Carter’s eclectic mix of genres, which incorporates landmarks, portraits and abstracts.

Carter says his work is based on a Henry Wadsworth Longfellow quote stating that “Nature is a revelation of God; Art is a revelation of man,” describing the two paths his artwork has traversed during the past few years.

“On the one hand, I enjoy producing traditional paintings of land and seascapes, portraits and wildlife – capturing the surface considerations of what is pleasant to the eye and comforting to the spirit,” he said. “On the other hand, I am moved by a desire to produce larger, abstracted works of strident colors and bold design – which are efforts to tickle the eye and stimulate the soul with something unexpected.”

Carter received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in studio art with concentrations in painting, ceramics and photography from Northeast Missouri State University, now Truman State University, in Kirksville, Missouri. He served as graphics manager for a sign company from 1996 to 2010. In February 2011, he and his wife, Sally, opened “dave’s studio—Visual Art Services,” which offers artwork, art supplies and art classes. The Carters moved to Cape Girardeau, Missouri, in summer 2014.

Carter has been featured in solo exhibitions in galleries across Missouri, including Sedalia’s City Hall Gallery, the Hannibal Arts Council, the Reynolds County Museum, the Margaret Harwell Art Museum, the Cape Girardeau County History Center, Altenburg’s Lutheran Heritage Center Museum, the Sikeston Depot Museum and Jefferson City’s Capital Arts Gallery. Additionally, his artwork has been featured in Missouri Department of Conservation Nature Centers in Cape Girardeau, Kirkwood, Kansas City, Jefferson City and Ste. Genevieve.

Carter is a juried member of Best of Missouri Hands; member of the Board of Directors of the Arts Council of Southeast Missouri; and co-chair of the Visual Arts Cooperative Cape Girardeau, Ste. Genevieve Artist Guild and Art St. Louis.
