Past: Southeast's River Campus Presents Press Rewind

Donald C. Bedell Performance Hall

Southeast Missouri State University’s Department of Music will host its “Press Rewind” jazz concert at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 15 in the Donald C. Bedell Performance Hall at Southeast’s River Campus.

Face coverings will be required, and social distancing guidelines will be in place. Due to capacity limits, patrons are encouraged to reserve their seats early.

In this season’s opening concert, the Jazz Lab and Studio Ensembles will present a collection of tunes that will take the audience on an epic musical journey. The concert will feature tunes that were supposed to be performed last spring before River Campus events were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Some new charts have been added to reflect the times, said Dr. Joseph Jefferson, Southeast assistant professor of trombone/euphonium and director of jazz studies.

Jazz Lab will perform “Emancipation Blues,” “Smooth Operator,” “How High The Moon” and “The Best of Earth Wind and Fire.” Jazz Studio will perform “Cute,” “Here’s That Rainy Day,” “The Art of the Matter” and “Caravan.”

Students soloists from the Jazz Lab include Rachel Harness (trombone), Destiny Barbeau (trombone), Dalton Singer (trombone), Jacob Cantoni (trombone), Brendan Iverson (trombone), Tyler Richardson (alto saxophone), Clayton Seabaugh (alto saxophone) and Alyssa Phillips (tenor saxophone). Student soloists from the Jazz Studio include Max Janssen (alto saxophone), Doug Evans (tenor saxophone), Michael Jones (guitar), Alex Featherston (trumpet), Matt Coffman (trumpet), Ashleigh Green (trombone), Alex Evrley (trombone), Luke McFall (trombone), Joel Fasnut (trombone), Carter Simonds (trombone) and Booker Grass (drum-set).

“What makes this concert particularly interesting is that both groups have had to work extremely hard to prepare these charts during the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Jefferson. “However, these students have risen to the challenge. I am very proud of them for pushing ahead in spite of the rehearsal restrictions and jazz safety protocols. This concert will have a little something for everyone. We hope that people will come out and support the efforts of these hardworking students.”
