Red Cross Quilt Comes Home

The Union County Museum will exhibit a signature quilt that was recently donated. The quilt was made in 1918 by the local Cobden Red Cross as a fundraiser. The quilt has 759 names of primarily Cobden and Alto Pass area residents embroidered in red on white squares. In addition, there are ten groups also memorialized in red embroidery. Signature quilts were popular during this time period and often were used as a way to raise funds for worthy cause. Individuals paid a nominal fee to have their name placed on the quilt. A raffle usually was conducted once the quilt was finished with the winner taking home the quilt. The quilt belonged to Hester Whitaker Hill who grew up in the Cobden area and passed away in 1995. Her granddaughter donated the quilt. Union County Historical Society president, Patrick Brumleve, remarked “This is a major acquisition for the museum and an important local historical artifact.” Information on the history of the quilt will be part of the display. The display starts on Saturday, August 15 and runs through September. Hours for the museum Saturday/Sunday, 1p.m. - 5 p.m. The museum is located in downtown Cobden on S. Appleknocker Street.
