Past: Southeast's Catapult Creative House Presents 'Space Invader?'

“Space Invaders?,” an exhibition of sculptural works by Shawn Guiling, will be on display April 5-May 7 as part of the Student Artist of the Month exhibition series at Southeast Missouri State University’s Catapult Creative House.

An exhibition reception, which is free and open to the public, is scheduled for Friday, May 7 from 5-9 p.m. Face coverings will be required, and social distancing guidelines will be in place.

Guiling, an instructor of psychology at Southeast, is currently also pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts with an emphasis in sculpture at Southeast. His artwork focuses on the utilization and repurposing of found objects and their relationship to their space and surroundings, with additional interests in painting and photography.

His most recent body of work began as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic. His art retreated to the spaces of farmland that equaled peace and safety in his childhood in southeast Missouri. He explores the psychological role that locations and objects play in one’s life with simple materials assembled against the backdrop of fields and the horizon.

As a part of a program to promote community-based and integrated art making, a student artist is chosen to exhibit his or her work at Catapult Creative House’s Student Studio Gallery each month. These exhibitions will showcase a range of work from individual artists that highlights their personal and professional artistic explorations as a part of the southeast Missouri art community. These artists explore the physicality of the human condition, its relationship to nature, and the role of art in contemporary society. In addition to the exhibition, attendees are welcome to entire Catapult facilities including the Department of Art and Design students’ studios upstairs, as well as the Catapult Creative House Shoppe, which features student work and local business products.
