Wednesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday, 12 to 4 p.m.

A vestige is a trace of something that is no longer present.  Both artists explore the idea of creating a permanent artifact to honor the past through the use of historic processes.

Chrystal Nause’s photography of her world travels documents objects of antiquity and historic locations; it serves to signify past memories through the broader human experience. Her image of old McAndrew Stadium is a fine example of Nause’s ability to capture those historic qualities.

Utilizing black and white film, antique equipment, and traditional darkroom printing techniques, Nause’s hauntingly engaging, toned silver-gelatin prints pay homage to the history of the craft.

The popularization of photography in the late 1880s makes Chrystal’s craft quite young in comparison to Joshua’s 1600’s mokume gane metalsmithing.

Joshua Gates’ mystically styled and intricate work incorporates copper, silver, brass and pewter and often includes natural minerals or sedimentary stones.  Each of these elements has been formed naturally over thousands of years and must be mined from the earth.  The traditional techniques he utilizes have been traced to early civilizations.

They both grew up in rural northern Illinois, where they met while attending art classes.

Chrystal is a photographer, illustrator, and painter with a strong interest in archaeology.

Joshua works as a metalsmith, painter, and a very patient photographer’s assistant.

Chrystal received her Bachelor of Arts degrees (Photography, Administration of Justice) from Southern Illinois University in 2005, and a Master of Arts degree in Anthropology in 2010. Joshua earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees (Metals, Glass) from Southern Illinois University in 2006. They reside in Makanda, Illinois with their dogs, Nola and Dredger.
