First Friday with the Arts: December 4, 2015 Listing

Break out your scarves and mittens for a chilly First Friday with the Arts on December 4th from 5:00 – 9:00 pm with plenty to warm your hearts, tummy, and eyes! This time of year we are lucky to have not only wonderful artwork on display throughout downtown Cape Girardeau, but also Old Town Cape’s Downtown Christmas Open House. This means carolers, decorations, Santa Claus, and free horse and carriage rides!

Arts Council of Southeast Missouri, 32 North Main Street

The Arts Council of Southeast Missouri will host a reception for the 2015 Annual Regional Juried Exhibition. The show will be displayed until January 30, 2016 and will feature pieces by 29 regional artists.

The exhibition was developed to demonstrate the diversity of the five-state region and the artists who live here. Artists were encouraged to submit works that interpreted any aspect of the Southeast Missouri Region, as well as its bordering states. The piece selected to be this year’s “Best of Show”, and the recipient of the $500 cash prize, will be unveiled at the reception on Friday evening. Second place, and three honorary awards, will also be named during the 6:00 pm ceremony.

The artwork for the 2015 Regional Juried Exhibition was selected by James F. Wilson. Wilson is a Missouri native with a Bachelors of Fine Arts in Painting and Printmaking from Kansas City Art Institute and a Masters of Fine Arts Degree in Graduate Painting from Boston University. Wilson is currently showing at the Kodner Gallery in Clayton, Missouri and teaches as an Artist-in-Residence Professor at Mineral Area College in Park Hills, Missouri.

In addition the Regional Juried Exhibit, the Visual Arts Cooperative will also display their Annual Mini Exhibit in the Jean A. Chapman Gallery. This year’s exhibit features dozens of original artwork miniatures, priced below $75, and painted by local and regional artists who are members of the Cooperative. The Visual Arts Cooperative will also debut new works in their gallery space at the Arts Council. Window exhibitors for December to January will be L. Sue Kemp and Lynn Robey.

Artisan Gifts, 821 A Broadway Street

Artisan Gifts features artisan made jewelry, ornaments, pottery and a wide variety of fine crafts. The featured artists for December are Marti Hartle and Leslie Compass. For more information, call 270-2931. Holiday hours are Tues – Sat between 12 – 4 and on First Friday from 12 – 9.

The Artist Studio, 38 A North Main Street

The Artist Studio will exhibit for Christmas shoppers, as well as, art fans, and feature it's holiday series for 2015 "Pear & Partridge" created by Judy Barks-Westrich, as well as, new abstract florals! "Special Guest" is Julia Jorgensen showcasing knitting & crochet scarves & shawls - perfect gifts for children & adults! The studio will be open from 11-9pm. Welcome!

Gallery of Inspiration

The Gallery of Inspiration features a variety of artwork created by the consumer artists of the Community Counseling Center. They will be featuring “Real Life Sketches” by Rob, who will be on-site doing Portrait Sketches.

Painted Wren Art Gallery

The Painted Wren Art Gallery will be exhibiting a painting, which was painted by 7 local artists and members of the Cat Ranch Art Guild. The painting was lost for 12 years and found again this past summer! It will be raffled off with tickets available for purchase during First Friday. Hundreds of pieces of artwork and jewelry are available for viewing and purchase.

WESTRAY Studio

Photography by Dr. Joel Ray and drawings by Jeanie Eddleman will be on display. New drawings and sandstone coasters are available. We can also personalize items with YOUR favorite photos. Stop by and check out our wide assortment of Cape County area memorabilia. New items: 15 oz. mugs available and can be personalized.

Catapult: Creative House, 612 Broadway Street

A one of a kind creative arts and industries incubator, Catapult Creative House fosters an entrepreneurial spirit on display, from wall to wall, within the entire building. Within These Walls is a cross-disciplinary, cross-departmental exhibition created to celebrate past faculty mentorship along with potential future collaborative endeavors associated with Catapult Creative House. Alongside their faculty mentors, current and past Southeast Missouri State University students present their work within these walls, providing a glimpse into the creative energy generated within a space dedicated to experimentation, collaboration, and the entrepreneurial spirit.

The Crisp Museum, 518 South Fountain Street

From cowboys to steam trains, Jesse James and Huck Finn, the subjects of these artworks explore the energy, anxiety and conflicted nature of America’s conception of itself. The American Mythologies exhibition organized by The State Historical Society of Missouri with support of its Research Center-Cape Girardeau. Artworks on loan from the SHSMO Art Collection, Columbia, Missouri.

Transition Spaces 15.2: An exhibition space devoted to the work of artists within 150 miles of Cape Girardeau. From Oct. 30 - Jan. 24, artwork by Aaron Horrell and Barb Bailey will be on display.

RENAISSANCE, 139 North Main Street

Stop by and experience the art, style, living world of artist and owner, Sherry Yaeger. Many of Sherry's new works are inspired by the Missouri countryside such as her paintings of the Mississippi River. Many other works are faith-based and inspirational that tell a story in layers. Renaissance will be open from 10-8pm.

River Campus Art Gallery, 518 South Fountain Street, Seminary Rm 106

The River Campus Art Gallery will be hosting a BFA Graduating Seniors Exhibition featuring student artists graduating with a BFA in studio art with a specialization in ceramics, digital art, graphic design/illustration, painting, printmaking or sculpture. Reception from 5 – 7 pm.

Distorted Memories of Summer Days will be on display from 5 – 8 pm. "Participants were asked to create photographs with mirrors or prisms and digitally edit photographs in a Lomography style of their choice. This exhibition includes art by students taking Digital Art Photo Video in the Department of Fine Art, Digital Art Student Mentors, Associate Professor of Digital Art Emily Denlinger, and Zack Tucker Media Specialist at Heather MacDonald Greene Multimedia Center in Kent Library."
