FIRST FRIDAY WITH THE ARTS – SEPTEMBER 2016

First Friday with the Arts will bring new artwork to galleries and businesses throughout Downtown Cape Girardeau on September 2, 2016 from 5:00 – 9:00 pm.

Thank you to our First Friday partners listed below, who will be open from 5-9 pm (unless otherwise stated), as well as to our other Friends of the Arts: Old Town Cape, C.P. Arts Council of Southeast Missouri, 16 North Spanish Street

The Arts Council of Southeast Missouri is excited to announce that they will commemorate their move into a new, permanent location at 16 N. Spanish Street in Downtown Cape Girardeau with a Grand Opening celebration on Friday, September 2nd from 4:30 pm – 9 pm. Grand Opening festivities will include a ribbon cutting at 4:30 pm, wine and hors d’oeuvres, live music, a champagne toast at 6:30 pm, special prizes and a fun interactive community project.

The Arts Council’s Annual Members Exhibit will also open on Friday, September 2nd and will showcase the work of Arts Council members. Julia Thompson, director of the City of Cape Girardeau’s Parks and Recreation Department, will serve as this year’s juror. Award announcements will be made at 6:00 pm, prior to the champagne toast. The Visual Arts Cooperative will also be displaying new artwork by their members.

Artisan Gifts, 821 A Broadway Street

The Artist Studio, 38 A North Main Street

The Artist Studio will be featuring new paintings by Judy Barks-Westrich. Open till 9pm. Also, space still available for evening "Acrylic Workshop" - Sept. 26, 27, Oct. 3 & 4 from 6-9pm. All supplies included in fee of $175. No experience needed - just desire for creative pleasure. Awesome workshop - you will enjoy!

“Estamos Aqui: We Are Here” will have an opening reception from 4:00 – 8:00 pm. Featuring contemporary serigraphs by 40 artists who took an opportunity to learn a specialized silkscreen print technique from a collaborative Austin-based residency. Many of the artists are speaking from the Latino/Chicano perspective, and the resulting portfolio of prints expresses their celebrations, sorrows, challenges, popular culture and personal experiences.

River Campus Art Gallery, 518 South Fountain Street - Seminary Building Rm 106

A collection of artwork from the current art faculty at the University of Tennessee at Martin. The exhibit includes paintings, drawings, fibers, ceramic, sculpture and digital artwork. The opening reception will be from 5:00 – 7:00 pm.

Please join us First Friday, September 2nd from 6-8pm as we visit with local author Emily Priddy! She will be signing copies of her novel, “Greetings from Coldwater." The novel is set on historic Route 66 in the fictional town of Coldwater, New Mexico, and tells the story of a young woman who buys the dilapidated but historic Tumbleweed Motel from its longtime owner, a mysterious but kindly widow who is forced to retire after being diagnosed with a terminal illness. The 573 Food Truck will also be out back from 5-9pm

Cup ‘n Cork will be featuring the artwork of L. Sue Kemp S.W.S. Sue is a member of the Southwestern Watercolor Society and works in watermedia and collage. Sue paints for personal expression, to record her experiences, and give life to her feelings and emotions. She paints because she can’t help herself.

Jeffry Hawk will be exhibiting her pastel artwork at The Glenn House, with a feature on portraits from the film “Gone with the Wind.”

Old Town Cape,

Old Town Cape will bring "Tunes at Twilight" during First Friday with the Arts at 6:30 pm featuring Evan Webb and Adam Hellman are part of a five-piece, hard-driving, country band based out of Southeast Missouri/Southern Illinois. they bring the voice of the heartland to the stage with country and western, red dirt and American rock and roll.
