Past: Meeting of the Illinois Chapter Trail of Tears Association

Vienna City Park Vienna, Illinois

Want to know more about the Trail of Tears in southern Illinois? The Illinois Chapter Trail of Tears Association will be hosting an informal meeting on Sunday September 11, 2016, in Vienna, Illinois. The gathering will begin at 3:00 PM and will be at Shelter Number 2 in the City Park in Vienna. This is an opportunity to meet others interested in the Trail of Tears and to meet members of the board of directors of the Illinois Chapter.

The Cherokee were forced from the Eastern United States to re-settlement in Oklahoma, which was known as the Indian Territory at that time. Large groups of these Native Americans traveled across southern Illinois in 1838-1839. The Counties they traversed were Pope, Johnson, and Union.

Members of the board of directors and other Chapter members will be available to answer questions and provide information about the Trail of Tears. Literature and displays will be available. Refreshments will also be available. The public is encouraged to attend and learn more about this tragic event in American history.

The Vienna City Park is on Illinois State Route 146 about a half mile West of Interstate 24. For more information telephone 618-771-6877.
