Fulton’s Historic Brick District will host “Autumn on the Bricks,” its annual fall celebration, Oct. 7 and 8 on Court Street in downtown Fulton. Fine art, wine, and beer enthusiasts are invited to attend the event, newly expanded to a two-day festival, sponsored by Art House, Brick District and Brick District Playhouse.

This year Art House will feature a special exhibit of the historic Folk Art of Fulton’s own Jesse Howard. The work of the “Man of Many Signs” will be on display starting Friday, Oct. 7 during the kick-off event in front of the Brick District Playhouse, 613 Court Street. Kansas City songwriter Mark Stevenson will perform his songs containing lyrics inspired from Jesse’s writings, followed by live music from the Kay Brothers.

To learn more about renowned artist Jesse Howard, whose works have been on exhibit in the Smithsonian, Kansas City Art Institute and the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis, read Jesse Howard, Fulton and the Arguments That Became Art, written by Tom Riley about Jesse Howard’s life in Fulton.

On Saturday, the local community and visitors will celebrate with original works of fine art, artisanal foods, local wines, and craft beers. Children’s activities will include a pumpkin patch, plus face painting and seasonal crafts. Raffle tickets will also be on sale for a chance to win one of two $250 Brick District gift certificates.

Court Street between 4th and 6th Streets will be closed to traffic and filled with artists’ booths and demonstrations, as well as an expanded Farmer’s Market and live music, including the following:

Oatmeal for the Foxhounds, 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Joel Anderson Quartet, 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Admittance to Saturday’s festival is free. Tastings of craft beers, local wines and distilleries will be available with the purchase of a $20 tasting glass.

All food on the menu will be from local producers, focusing on specialty crops and producers from local sources. Food booths will open for breakfast at 8:30 a.m. for those exploring the expanded Farmer’s Market, and then transition to lunch, featuring locally made brats, burgers and sausages from Central Missouri Meat & Sausage.

Art House is a vibrant and welcoming center founded on the belief that creative arts enrich lives. Through rotating exhibits, focused instruction and educational outreach, our mission is to create opportunities for the economic and artistic growth of established and emerging artists and to nurture the community’s appreciation and understanding of the arts. Art House also serves as a centerpiece in the efforts of the Brick District in bringing more events, tourists, and businesses to our historic downtown. The gallery is open six days a week, Monday through Saturday and features fine art from over 100 Missouri artists.
