RED LIGHT NIGHT: “The Word Made Sight”- Father Robert Towner

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO-- Thursday, October 27, at 7:00 p.m., the Arts Council of Southeast Missouri will host the second Red Light Night of this season with the topic “The Word Made Sight” featuring Father Robert Towner.

Father Robert Towner is an Episcopal priest, who has retired after 40 years as a church employee, and ten years as an adjunct teacher at Southeast Missouri State University in the Department of Philosophy, Religion and Political Science.

While on sabbatical in 2011 in Scotland, Bob lived on the Isle of Iona where the beautiful Book of Kells was scribed, and he was inspired to learn calligraphy. He is self-taught. Drawing from the traditions he learned while in Scotland, Fr. Towner draws word art, traditional Celtic and contemporary calligraphy. For the most part he uses retro, dip pens. And he signs his work, using the Anglo-Saxon form, Hrodberht.

His calligraphy is a contemplative, silent development of the spiritual vocation he dedicated four decades of his life to, except that now he is freer to include poetry and scripture from all wisdom traditions.

Hrodberht’s work has been presented twice at one-person shows in Cape and he is currently showing at Yoga East Healing Arts Center on Broadway in Cape Girardeau. He is a member of the Visual Arts Co-op and the Arts Council.

During his presentation, Fr. Towner will relay his experiences on the Isle of Iona to audience members and will walk them through his discovery of a different way to break open sacred and poetic texts. Silent words may be an oxymoron, but Fr. Towner will share how contemplative practice breathes new life into scraps of ancient scripture and poetry, and invites the viewer to quiet wonder.

Red Light Night is a series of after-hours discussions on controversial and taboo topics within the arts. Red Light Night sessions are presented by guest lecturers and panelists at the Arts Council of Southeast Missouri in Downtown Cape Girardeau on select Thursdays at 7:00 p.m. Please note, topics and discussion are intended for a mature audience.

Join other arts supporters in controversial discussions during Red Light Night. The Arts Council of Southeast Missouri is located at 16 North Spanish Street in Cape Girardeau, MO. Galleries are open Tuesday- Saturday, from 10am to 4pm.
