"Citizen CATE: Solar Eclipse Science for Everyone"

Natural, spectacular, rare, and free, a total eclipse of the sun is an event every observer will remember for a lifetime! Dr. Peggy Hill and Dr. Michael Rodgers will explore the basic science of eclipses and describe Southeast Missouri State University’s participation in the Citizen CATE experiment, a

nationwide endeavor by 60 field teams positioned along the path of totality to record the evolution of the solar corona during totality. They’ll also describe how you can safely view and photograph a solar eclipse, and conclude with a brief look at remarkable roles that eclipses have played in history, religion, the arts, psychology, pop culture, and other aspects of the human experience.

Kent Library’s Athenaeum Series, which began in the fall of 2007, derives its name from the classical Greek goddess of wisdom, Athena. These open forums, public lectures and discussions were originally popular in Greece but eventually spread to Rome and Western Europe. Kent Library’s series showcases the expertise of campus faculty, staff and students. All events are free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served. Please join us as we carry forward an ancient, but still vibrant, tradition.
