The Scott Historical & Genealogy Society will meet Tuesday, September 19, 2017 at 7 p.m. in the meeting room of the Riverside Regional Library at 44 N. Winchester, Benton, Missouri. John C. Fisher of Kennett, Mo will present a program "Southeast Missouri from Swampland to Farmland: The Transformation of the Lowlands."

After farming for more than 30 years, John C. Fisher began freelancing writing in 1995. He has written articles for Kitchen Garden and Old Farmer's Almanac. For several years he wrote a column for Missouri Life Magazine. In 2003 the University of Missouri Press published Fisher's first book, Catfish, Fiddles, Mules and More: Missouri's State Symbols. In 2008, he published the book, Pot Roast, Politics, and Ants in the Pantry, Missouri's Cookbook Heritage. He co-authored this book with his wife, Carol. In 2011, he published his third book, Food in the American Military: A History, also co-authored with his wife, Carol. This volume won first place in the Missouri Writer's Guild Walter Williams Major Work Award competition. Southeast Missouri from Swampland to Farmland: The Transformation of the Lowlands is his fourth book
