Freeform Baskets (2 options)
Friday, May 8, 2026, 9:00 am - 3:00 pm
Cape Girardeau Conservation Nature Center
Registration period: April 24 - May 7
Connect with the past and enjoy the accomplishment of making your own version of an Appalachian egg or melon basket.
We'll take turns at the difficult work of stripping a hickory tree to harvest the inner bark and cambium layers that were traditionally used to make the weaving reed. Then we'll shift to using rattan reed to create our own baskets.
All necessary supplies will be provided. You are welcome to bring snacks and lunch or take a break at any point.
NOTE: Only those registered may attend program. Participants must have adequate hand strength and dexterity to manipulate the reed and use clippers or garden shears.
