Past: 2017 Center for Missouri Studies Fall Lecture and Annual Meeting

After four years of fighting and 36 million casualties, a Missourian helped end the Great War nearly 100 years ago. The American Expeditionary Forces led by General John J. Pershing cut through German lines and changed the course of the First World War.

Join New York Times bestselling author Andrew Carroll on October 7 for an intimate look at the only man other than George Washington that Congress has called the "General of the Armies of the United States."

The 1 p.m. presentation at the Courtyard by Marriott and Conference Center in Columbia will delve into Carroll's most recent publication, My Fellow Soldiers. At 11 a.m. the business meeting, also at the Courtyard Marriott, will celebrate outstanding scholarship related to Missouri history. Attendees will hear highlights from SHSMO's past year.

Speaker

Author Andrew Carroll has spent a lifetime supporting literacy, sharing poetry, and preserving wartime correspondence. Letters of a Nation: A Collection of Extraordinary American Letters and War Letters: Extraordinary Correspondence from American Wars landed him on the New York Times bestsellers list.

His most recent publication "My Fellow Soldiers: General John Pershing and the Americans Who Helped Win The Great War" is lauded as "a marvelously vivid and moving account of the American experience in World War I, with General John Pershing featured prominently in the foreground."

Carroll, who lives in Washington, DC, is the director of the Center for American War Letters at Chapman University and executive director of the American Poetry and Literacy Project, a national nonprofit that promotes literacy and encourages a greater public awareness of poetry.

Please reserve a place for yourself and additional attendees by September 25: $35 members, $45 nonmembers. No refunds will be issued for cancellations made after that date. All other events are free and open to the public.
