Past: Poplar Bark Baskets

Cape Girardeau Conservation Nature Center

Registration period: May 7 - May 17

In this class we will learn how to make bark containers from tulip poplar trees. Participants will remove the bark, score it for bending and drill holes for lace up. In addition, rims will be fashioned to prep it for drying. Bark “bucket” construction is a traditional and even prehistoric skill that can be practiced in late spring and early summer. We'll look at how and why these buckets were built, what other trees can be used and what the bark containers have been used to do. The final bark bucket will be yours to take home.

Bring gloves and a pocketknife. If you have access to a cordless drill and a 1/4" drill bit please bring that as well. Some drills will be on hand to borrow and use.
