Past: Southeast Missouri State University’s River Campus presents Sundays at Three: A Soldier and the King

Robert F. and Gertrude L. Shuck Music Recital Hall

The Chateau Girardeau “Sundays at Three” series opens the 2019-2020 season with a Southeast Missouri State University faculty program featuring Stravinsky’s "Histoire du Soldat" and Michael Daugherty’s "Dead Elvis."

“Histoire du Soldat” is based on a Russian folk tale and relates the parable of a soldier who trades his fiddle to the devil in return for unlimited economic gain. The music is scored for a septet of violin, double bass, clarinet, bassoon, cornet (often played on trumpet), trombone, and percussion, and features numerous beat changes.

“Dead Elvis” is a 10-minute, single-movement work inspired by the King of Rock-n-Roll, Elvis Presley.

The Sundays at Three season opener will feature a wide range of Southeast's wind and percussion faculty, especially Dr. Jacqueline Wilson, assistant professor of music, who will play the solo bassoon part on Dead Elvis. While the piece itself is not based on Elvis songs, fans may be able to catch a quote or two embedded in the piece, and will also enjoy a visual tribute to the King.

Tickets may be purchased by contacting the River Campus Box Office, located in the Cultural Arts Center, 518 S. Fountain St., weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., by calling (573) 651-2265, or online at RiverCampus.org.
